What is an Assessment?

Assessments are entries that represent quizzes, reflection questions, and surveys within Courses. They are created in the Assessments Channel with the Assessment Builder and are placed within Course entries with the Assessment Block.

Assessment Builder

Create and manage Assessment entries for Courses.

Define Parameters & Assessment Information

Set parameters and define content for each assessment, including:

  • Title
  • Instructions
  • Percentage to Pass
  • Assessment Success Message
  • Assessment Failure Message
  • Attempts allowed

Control Randomization & Feedback

You can also toggle whether the questions are randomized and whether the feedback is provided to the user in real time (after each question), after the user has submitted, or not at all.

Create Question Banks

You can enter a number into the "Assessment Question Limit" field to restrict the assessment to a maximum number of questions. Then, you can enter as many questions as you wish into the assessment. Pair this with the "Randomize Questions" switch and you have created a Question Bank.

For example, you could enter 25 questions, set the question limit to 10, and enable randomization. The resulting user experience will be 10 random questions from the bank of 25. Every student would have a slightly different 10 random questions. Users that retake the quiz or the course will also encounter variations.

Assessment Types

Quiz

Quiz Assessment entry types are machine-scored. Create questions and answers directly in the Assessment entry. Current question types include: Answer Selection and Short Essay. The types can be mixed within the same Assessment, but not within the same Question.

Answer Selection
Use the “Answer Selection” type for True/False and multiple choice, where one answer is correct. Multiple correct responses are not supported. Optionally, provide custom feedback for each answer.

Short Essay
Use “Short Essay” question type for reflection or responses to open ended questions. This question type is not scored; there are no wrong answers, but you may require a minimum number of characters for the response.

Form

Create Form Assessment types to capture non-scored data, such as demographic information or survey responses. The Form Assessment type references an existing Form you have created in Formie.

You can provide instructions and messaging within the Assessment entry. Additionally, you can allow or restrict a user’s ability to revise a form after initial submission.

Qualtrics

The Qualtrics Assessment entry type is used when a client must link to an existing Qualtrics form, such as a survey or other non-scored method of capturing information. Setting this up requires knowledge of the Qualtrics confirmation code and URL. Enter a redirect URL to bring the user back into your course or another preferred page after they submit the Qualtrics form.

Survey

The Survey entry type is designed to collect responses without scoring the answers.

When Questions are created, you do not need to indicate which answers are "correct." In fact, the survey assessment type will ignore any correct/incorrect indications and answer feedback.

Users can skip survey questions and still move forward through the course.

Surveys can use the same questions types as Quiz Assessments (Answer Selection and Short Essay) as well as a third question type: the Likert Scale.

Likert Scale
Use a matrix to apply a set of answers to multiple questions. In some cases, this looks like a Likert Scale. The answers are custom-made and can contain values. The Likert Scale question type is ONLY available in Survey Assessment types.
