Glossary
Ad Hoc Pages
One-off pages that don’t really “fit” in your overall site organization. These could be used for special announcements, a temporary event page, etc.
Aliases
Use Alias entries to build custom URLs for pages, assets, or documents in your site or external links. A typical use case for this is for marketing purposes, when it is advantageous to list a shorter, simpler URL on printed marketing material or verbal references.
For example, instead of listing: https://arts.psu.edu/performances-collections/facilities , create an alias and direct users to arts.psu.edu/facilities
Assessment
Assessments are entries that represent quizzes, reflection questions, and surveys within courses. They are created in the Assessments Channel with the Assessment Builder and are placed within Course entries with the Assessment Block.
Assessment Builder
The tool found in the Craft Admin IU that allows admins to create and edit Assessment entries.
Assessments Channel
The specialized channel for creating and managing Assessments.
Asset
Library of all the self-hosted, file-based content within a site. This includes: documents, videos, images, audio-clips, etc.
Add, delete, and sort these elements into different volumes to help keep your site organized and well-maintained.
Category
Categories are used to classify channel entry data and make it possible to place blocks of channel-based data (people, news, testimonials, etc) on a page.
Categories are how you can put different people or pages into “buckets” so you can then apply all the content in a bucket to a specific page through a Channel Listing, if needed.
Channels
Channels are specialized entries often used for content that will display in one or more locations throughout a site. Think of these as mini-databases. Anything in a channel is “portable” across the site in different ways. One place to edit, multiple places where it can display.
Control Panel
The backend administrative UI within Website Builder.
Core
Builder uses a set of Core instructions and styles. Core represents the default or standard version of Builder.
Courses
If your website includes a course component, you may see an entry called “Courses.” Courses use unique entry types of Courses and Content pages along with Course Builder blocks to generate pages with styling and behavior distinct from other website builder pages.
Craft user
Within Craft, users are people who can login to the site. This includes administrators from WPSU and editors from your organization.
If you need different levels of access, administrators can create additional groups. For instance, if you have a grad student you want to be able to enter events, but don’t want them to go live until they’re approved, an admin can create a “grad student” user type and assign that user type to the grad student user.
Note: a user is distinct from a directory entry.
Custom
Builder uses a set of Core instructions and styles; these are the standard default settings for Builder. Custom instructions and styles can be added to specific sites. These override the Core instructions.
Directory
Use Alias entries to build custom URLs for pages, assets, or documents in your site or external links. A typical use case for this is for marketing purposes, when it is advantageous to list a shorter, simpler URL on printed marketing material or verbal references.
For example, instead of listing: https://arts.psu.edu/performances-collections/facilities , create an alias and direct users to arts.psu.edu/facilities
Documents (Channel)
Documents Channel entries allow document assets (files that include PDF, .docx, and .xlsx file types) to be added to pages with the Document Download Block and connect files from Assets to custom titles, descriptions, and categories (not required).
Entries
Each entry holds content that will become a web page or content within a webpage.
Entry types
You can select different types of entries, depending on the function or look your page requires.
Events
Post events to your website with Events Channel entries. Provide title and date information, along with an optional description, location, and photo. You can include a button to link users to registration forms, event materials, or recordings.
Apply categories to provide news filtering options on the main events page or to display certain categories of events on specific website pages.
Featured Faculty
if you toggle this option ON, you can use it to put these people at the top of a list when you build a Channel Listing.
Inherit Sidebar
When selected, this option will automatically generate a sidebar based on the sidebar design of the parent page.
Link (Entry Type)
If you choose the "Link" entry type when constructing a page, this
allows you to have an item in your menu that goes to an external link (a page on a different website) or an internal link (a page within your own website).
News
News entries can be built by hand and reside natively on the website or efficiently linked directly to any external news source, such as Penn State news.
Apply categories to display specific categories of news throughout the website and to provide news filtering options on the main news page.
Schedule news in advance by editing the “post date.”
Pages
Pages are a basic type of website entry. A page in Craft = a page on your website.
PSU ID
this field is used for sites that integrate with Elsevier Pure (example); if your site does not provide Pure data, this field can be left blank.
Sidebar Builder
When you are creating a page using the "Standard Sidenav" entry type, you can use the Sidebar Builder to create a custom sidebar.
Contact Block - add a directory entry or office contact information
Call to Action - make a button with a link. Select button background and font colors. 💡Tip: use your site’s brand colors or Penn State brand colors for a cohesive look!
Navigation - provide a menu of pages based on the hierarchy; use this option if you want to include navigation with other sidebar builder blocks. Currently, one option is available: Siblings & Children (default).
Related Entries - provide links to other pages within your site. Typically, these would be relevant to users on this page. Heading is optional.
Template Snippet - insert a piece of code from a developer
Singles
One-of-a-kind pages. Typically, your site’s homepage.
Sort Priority
Specify the precise order directory entries appear when called in a Channel Listing. (For #1 to appear the top of the list, make sure your Channel Listing sort order is “Ascending.”)
Structures
View by Structure to see your website content pages displayed in a hierarchy. The main site navigation is automatically built according to how pages are structured.
When viewing entries, you can sort by structure and you can expand (>) or collapse (v) descendants in the list.
Pages listed in hierarchical structure → create the site’s main navigational menu.
Tabs
Organizational sections for Entry layouts
